Himiway: Is a 750W Class 2 eBike Good for Hills?

Yes, a 750W Class 2 eBike is a very good choice for most hills. For everyday riding, commuting, and recreational use, 750W provides enough motor power to make moderate and even fairly steep climbs much easier than they would be on a regular bicycle or a lower-powered eBike.
The important thing to understand is that 750W does not automatically mean a higher top speed. A Class 2 eBike generally provides motor assistance up to 20 mph. The benefit of a stronger motor is more noticeable when accelerating, carrying extra weight, riding into a headwind, or climbing hills.
Why 750W Works Well on Hills
One of the biggest advantages is the additional power available when the road starts going uphill.
On a mild or moderate hill, a good 750W eBike can often maintain a comfortable pace without requiring much effort from the rider. This is particularly useful for commuters who don't want to arrive at work exhausted or sweaty.
A Class 2 throttle is another advantage. If you need to get moving from a stop on an incline, the throttle can provide immediate assistance. It can also reduce the amount of pedaling required on shorter climbs.
For heavier riders or people carrying groceries, bags, or other cargo, the additional motor power becomes even more useful. A smaller motor may still climb the same hill, but it could require more rider input or lose more speed.
Watts Aren't the Whole Story
Don't choose an eBike for hills based only on the "750W" number.
Torque is also extremely important. Torque, usually measured in Newton-meters (Nm), gives you a better idea of how strongly the motor can turn the wheel under load.
For example, the Himiway D5 2.0 pairs a 750W geared hub motor with up to 90 Nm of torque. On paper, that's a much more useful specification for evaluating hill performance than motor wattage alone.
For normal neighborhood hills, rolling roads, and mixed urban terrain, that combination should provide plenty of assistance for most riders.
What About Steeper Hills?
This is where expectations matter.
A 750W motor is powerful, but it doesn't make every hill effortless.
On a very steep or long climb, rider weight, bike weight, battery charge, tire pressure, gearing, temperature, road surface, and motor design all affect performance.
For example, a heavy fat-tire eBikerequires more energy to move uphill than a lightweight commuter bike. Add a heavier rider and cargo, and the motor has to work even harder.
That's why I wouldn't recommend holding the throttle wide open for an entire long, steep climb. Pedaling along with the motor reduces the load on the electrical system and can also reduce battery consumption.
A practical approach is:
  • Use an appropriate low gear before the hill becomes very steep.
  • Increase pedal assist when necessary.
  • Keep pedaling instead of relying entirely on the throttle.
  • Avoid starting in a high gear on a steep slope.
  • Maintain proper tire pressure.
  • Give the motor a break if you notice unusually high heat or reduced performance.
This usually produces better climbing performance and is easier on the battery and motor.
Hub Motor vs. Mid-Drive
Motor type also matters.
A mid-drive motor can take advantage of the bicycle's drivetrain and gears. This can make it especially effective on very steep, sustained climbs.
A 750W geared hub motor, however, can still be an excellent choice for everyday hills. It is relatively simple, powerful, and doesn't depend on the bicycle's drivetrain to transfer motor power to the wheel.
For riders dealing with normal city hills, suburban roads, gravel paths, and occasional steeper sections, I wouldn't consider a quality 750W hub motor a disadvantage.
If your typical ride involves extremely steep mountain roads or long sustained climbs, however, motor design and gearing deserve more attention than wattage alone.
How Does the Himiway D5 2.0 Handle This Type of Riding?
The Himiway D5 2.0 is a good example of the type of eBike I would consider for riders who regularly encounter hills.
Its 750W geared hub motor and 90 Nm of torque provide substantial assistance, while the fat tires and full-suspension design are aimed at riding across a wider variety of surfaces.
The suspension doesn't directly give the motor more climbing power, but it can make rough roads, broken pavement, gravel, and uneven routes more comfortable.
The Himiway D5 2.0 20" is also interesting for riders who prefer smaller wheels and a lower, more manageable feel. Its 20 x 4-inch tires, low center of gravity, full suspension, and 750W/90 Nm motor combination can be useful on mixed urban routes where you encounter both hills and rough pavement.
The smaller-wheel configuration can feel particularly responsive at lower speeds, although the bike itself is still fairly heavy. That weight is something to consider if your route includes very long climbs or if you frequently need to carry the bike upstairs.
Other Himiway models, including the D5, D5 Pro, D7, D7 Pro, A7, A7 Pro, and C3, target somewhat different riding styles. Rather than choosing purely by the highest wattage number, I'd compare motor torque, total bike weight, gearing, tire type, riding position, battery capacity, and suspension according to the terrain you actually ride.
What Does a 750W Class 2 eBike Feel Like on a Hill?
For many riders, the biggest difference isn't outright speed. It's how much less intimidating a hill becomes.
Instead of seeing an incline and wondering whether you'll have enough energy to get to the top, you can increase the assist level, shift into an easier gear, and continue pedaling at a manageable effort.
The throttle is also convenient when restarting on an incline. Rather than trying to balance the bike while pushing hard on the pedals from zero speed, motor assistance can help get the bike rolling.
This is one reason a 750W Class 2 setup can work well for commuting. You get strong assistance when you need it without necessarily needing a faster eBike.
Does Climbing Hills Reduce Battery Range?
Absolutely.
Even with a large battery, expect less range on a hilly route than on flat ground. Moving the combined weight of the bike and rider against gravity requires considerable energy.
Battery consumption increases even more if you climb primarily with the throttle.
If maximizing range matters, contribute some pedal power on hills and use lower assistance levels on flat sections. Maintaining sensible tire pressure and avoiding unnecessary weight can help as well.
Manufacturers' maximum range figures should always be treated as estimates because real-world range changes significantly with terrain, rider weight, weather, speed, assistance level, and riding style.
